Hurricane Gustav reflections...

Okay, so I'm back at the Port working my regular Monday night shift after my weeklong hurrication. The physical displacement of the past week has left me somewhat psychologically muddled and I'm having a little trouble grounding myself to the moment and the plans I have for my future. The shock of the extreme hurricane angst I experienced after 2 years of no relevant hurricane activity in the gulf has left me quite frazzled. When I left for Atlanta that Saturday before Gustav arrived I was very much in the mindset that there was a very real chance that I might lose my entire collection of comix related books. I couldn't shake the sense of impending personal material apocalypse from my pscyhe and it left a deep impression on me. I don't like being in the thrall of such powerful pessimistic projections. I'm not sure at this moment what all this means but I know I'm going to have to come with a better way of dealing with the reality of approaching storms and how to secure my paper trove.

So that's when I knew....

This might be an odd post but I just had a flashback to my childhood when I was 8 years old. I'm watching the first DVD of Saturday Night Live's 3rd season (the Hugh Hefner episode-first aired 10/15/77) and there was a sci-fi sketch that I remember watching as a kid and the ending was 2 spaceships colliding into one another. The long rocket ship full of men crashing inside of the ringed spaceship full of women. I got the joke then so obviously I knew what fucking was about at age 8. I have a clear memory of listening to the Fleetwood Mac song "Rhiannon" on the radio when it first came out and thanks to a wikipedia search was February 4, 1975. It was that song that really got me thinking there's something adults do with one another and "why is she like a cat in the night." I don't think I was imagining the physical mechanics but sometime from hearing that song and seeing that sketch I found out from somewhere.

Maybe that's TMI, but hey, I'm filling in the gap (sorry...couldn't resist) of my collective memory.

It feels like it's a "laptop replacement" in the same way a laptop was a "desktop replacement." I'm uncomfortable with how much of a tech fetishist I feel right now but there it is....I love my new iPhone. I can't wait to work on a comix viewing application for it with my pal Snappy.

It's a tiny 64 panel wordless comic about a dumpy little cave-dude. He kinda looks like a little baby but he's not. Anyway, he has a little adventure that I hope will amuse all those who peruse it. I'll be giving them out at the dafa FUNGUS White Elephant party this wed 12/26, so if you'd like yours be sure to be there. I'm only making 60 of them.

I've wanted to do it for the last 2 years so it was very satisfying to get it done. I was pleased with the way it was recieved . So I thought I'd share it with those of you who couldn't make to the exhibit this year. Enjoy!

Been a real slow night at work. I've spent the better part of it reading David Michaelis' biography of Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz. I'm enjoying it but it's sad for me to learn how miserable Schulz was when he wasn't drawing the strip. I wish he had experienced more joy while he was alive but I suppose he did at the drawing board.

The 2nd Annual NOLA Draw-a-thon was a great success. I recieved many compliments on my poster design and folks loved the orientation micro-comic I did as a door giveaway.
